About The Kate Cares Program

Kate Cares is a community based stillbirth service program with the aim of helping families and health professionals to understand the cause of stillbirth, reduce its frequency and support families experiencing loss.  Kate Cares has developed specific testing guidelines with the goal that they will be offered all Indiana families experiencing stillbirth.  Test results are reviewed by a panel of experts who will try to determine the cause of death and make recommendations that might help a future pregnancy or other family members.

The Kate Cares assessment includes:
• A physical exam
• Radiographs (also known as “X-rays”)
• Medical photographs
• Chromosome studies
• Blood tests of the mother and/or father
• Reviewing pregnancy and hospital records
• Testing of the afterbirth (placenta and umbilical cord)
• Autopsy

Additional tests may also be recommended for specific situations.  Having all of the above will provide the best information.  Some families may choose to only have certain tests done if that is better for them.
