Guide to Evaluation of Stillborns & Protocol
What Testing is Available?

We understand you are considering testing for your stillborn baby. Many families find this testing helps them cope with their loss and answer questions such as “Why did this happen?” and “Will it happen again?”

We would like to offer our complete stillbirth assessment that includes:

• A physical exam of your baby’s body
• Radiographs (also known as “X-rays”)
• Medical photographs of your baby
• Chromosome studies from your baby and placenta
• Blood tests of the mother and/or father
• Reviewing your pregnancy and hospital records
• Testing of the afterbirth (placenta and umbilical cord)
• Autopsy (that will look at the inside of your baby’s body)

Additional testing for you or your baby may also be recommended. Having the entire assessment will provide you with the best information. You can also choose to only have only certain tests done if that is more comfortable for you. Some parts of the assessment are available at no charge to you. Costs of the rest of the tests will be billed to your insurance or Medicaid. Depending on the kind of insurance coverage you have, there may be portions of the testing you will be asked to pay for. If you have concerns about the cost of testing, please talk with your nurse or doctor. There may be programs at your hospital that can help. Also, you can contact Kate Cares at (317) 962-0663.
